MArble Worktop FAQs
How do I take care of marble kitchen countertops?
Daily care is simple: wipe down your marble surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth, warm water, and a neutral pH cleaner or mild dish soap. Because marble is calcium-based, always clean up acidic spills immediately, such as lemon juice, wine, vinegar, or tomato sauce, to prevent surface etching. We treat your marble with a professional-grade penetrating sealer upon installation, and we recommend re-sealing every 12 to 18 months to maintain optimum stain resistance.
Is marble good for kitchen countertops?
Yes, provided you appreciate the natural evolution of real stone. Marble is exceptionally durable, naturally heat-resistant, and offers unmatched, luxury veining that synthetic materials cannot truly replicate. It is particularly revered by home bakers because its cool natural surface is ideal for rolling pastry.
However, because marble is softer and more porous than quartz or granite, it will require periodic sealing and gentle care to manage surface patina over time.
How do I clean a marble bathroom counter?
Clean your marble vanity or bathroom worktop using warm water and a non-abrasive, pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh household chemicals, bathroom descalers, bleach, or scouring pads, as these will strip the protective sealant and etch the stone’s polished surface. For daily maintenance, simply wipe away toothpaste, soap scum, and cosmetic spills with a microfibre towel to prevent residue buildup.
What is the difference between honed and polished marble finishes?
The choice of finish changes both the look and the maintenance of your marble:
- Polished Finish: Features a high-gloss, reflective surface that enhances the depth and vibrancy of the stone’s color and veining. It is slightly better at repelling liquid stains, though micro-scratches are more noticeable under direct light.
- Honed Finish: Offers a smooth, matte, non-reflective surface that provides a modern, organic look. Honed marble hides light surface scratches and etching better than polished stone, making it a popular choice for high-traffic kitchens.
Will there be visible joints in my marble worktops?
While long runs or complex layouts (like L-shapes) usually require joining two slabs, our skilled stone masons work hard to make seam lines as discreet as possible. During our precision digital templating process, we align the natural veining of the marble at the joint to ensure visual continuity. We then match the colour of the resin adhesive to your specific stone slab, resulting in tight, smooth, and barely noticeable seams.
Marble vs. Quartz: How does natural marble compare to marble-effect quartz?
While both make luxury surfaces, they differ in composition and care:
- Natural Marble: 100% natural, unique, and offers classic prestige with a cool tactile feel. It requires routine sealing and careful maintenance around acidic liquids.
- Marble-Effect Quartz: An engineered stone that replicates marble veining on a non-porous surface. It never requires sealing, is highly scratch- and stain-resistant, and provides uniform pattern consistency across large kitchen layouts.
How much do bespoke marble worktops cost in the UK?
The cost of custom marble worktops depends on several factors:
- Stone Rarity: Sourcing rare Italian marbles (like Calacatta or Statuario) commands a higher premium than classic Carrara marble.
- Slab Thickness & Edging: Standard 20mm or 30mm slabs differ in price, as do custom edge profiles (e.g., Ogee, Bullnose, or Mitred Waterfall edges).
- Fabrication & Layout: Complex cut-outs for undermount sinks, drainage grooves, or book-matched backsplashes require specialised mason labor.
We provide transparent, fully itemised quotes tailored to your exact kitchen or bathroom plans.
Can hot pans be placed directly onto a marble countertop?
Marble is naturally heat-resistant and will not melt like synthetic materials. However, placing piping-hot pans directly from the oven or hob onto cold marble can cause thermal shock, which leads to internal cracking or surface discoloration. We always recommend using trivets or hot pads to protect the natural stone structure and preserve your sealant.
